The Landes Letter - May 2021 Edition

Friends,

I hope this email finds everyone doing well and staying safe. My focus this month is to provide updates from the Clerk's Office including introducing the office's summer interns and staff awards.

I have also included the latest photos from the Augusta County Courthouse virtual photograph tour. Please enjoy the latest photos.

Augusta County Clerk's Office Announces Summer Interns

Ramona Shelton and Ben Allen have been named Clerk’s Interns for the Summer. These two young people are the third set of students to be selected for the Clerk’s Office Internship Program. Our Office is very pleased to have both Ramona and Ben join the Clerk’s Office as our first Summer interns selected as part of our ongoing Clerk’s Office Internship Program. We look forward to having both students serving in the office this Summer.

Ms. Shelton just completed her Sophomore year at the College of William and Mary and is majoring in International Relations and Economics. She lives in Staunton. Mr. Allen just completed his Freshman year at Stuarts Draft High School and is interested in law and politics. He lives in Fishersville.

Staff Awards

Sheila Price, our Deputy Clerk - Bookkeeper, received our April Award for the Clerk's Light Bulb Award for the Brightest Suggestion for the month. Sheila developed a way for us to digitally keep and authorize our Secure Remote Access Agreements rather than paper copies. This will cut down on costs, and be a more efficient way to maintain these records.

Memorial Day

On this Memorial Day, please remember to honor America's fallen. These are the Memorial Plaques on the front of the Courthouse remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in World War I & II, the Korean & Vietnam Wars, and Iraq & Afghanistan Wars from Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro.

This is our continuing Augusta County Court House virtual photograph tour. This the marble bust of John Brown Baldwin (1820-1873) who served as the 30th Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1865-1869, and represented Augusta County. The bust was created by renowned Richmond sculptor Edward Virginius Valentine and is located in our Jury Room at the courthouse.

This is our continuing Augusta County Court House virtual photograph tour. This is the largest portrait we have in our Historic Courtroom A. This is Virginia Supreme Court Chief Justice Henry W. Holt, who also served as a Circuit Court Judge in Augusta County. A smaller copy of this portrait is also displayed in the Virginia Supreme Court Chambers in Richmond.
