I presented the Clerk's Light Bulb Award for July to Deputy Clerk and Land Recorder Sandy Harris. The Landes Letter - March 2021 Edition

Friends,

I hope this email finds everyone doing well and staying safe. My focus this month is to provide updates from the Clerk's Office including the approval of the Augusta County Court House Highway Marker and recognition for Deputy Clerk Rebecca L. Kimble earning the Virginia Court Clerk’s Association Master Deputy Circuit Court Clerk Certification.

I have also included the latest photos from the Augusta County Courthouse virtual photograph tour.

Augusta County Court House Virginia Highway Marker Granted

The Augusta County Court House application for a Virginia Historical Highway Marker was approved on March 18, by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources.

We are very excited to announce that the Augusta County Court House has been recognized by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources as deserving to be granted a Virginia Historical Highway Marker. The current courthouse, built in 1901, is the fifth building to sit on this historic site in downtown Staunton. The county’s first courthouse was a log structure built in 1745.

The Virginia Historical Highway Marker program documents facts, persons, events, and places prominently identified with the history of the nation, state, or region. The Department of Historic Resource’s purpose in erecting markers is to educate the public about Virginia’s history, not to honor, memorialize, or commemorate persons, events, or places. Because highway markers are not honorific in nature, they do not serve the same purpose as monuments, statues, memorial plaques, or war memorials. There are currently more than 2,500 markers located across the Commonwealth of Virginia. The program is among the oldest in the nation and began in 1927.

The Landes Letter - December 2020 Edition

Friends,

I hope this email finds everyone doing well and staying safe. My focus this month is to provide updates from the Clerk's Office including upcoming changes to the Concealed Handgun Permit Training and a grant received.

I have also included the latest photos from the Augusta County Courthouse virtual photograph tour.

The Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk's Office will be closed on Thursday, December 24th and Friday, December 25th in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The Clerk's office will also be closed on January 1st in observance of New Year's Day.

Concealed Hangun Permit Training Must Be In-Person In 2021

Beginning January 1, 2021, the training requirement to apply for a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit must be in-person, and will no longer be allowed to be completed online.

The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 264 and Senate Bill 263, which were signed into law by Governor Ralph Northam. The legislation changes Virginia Code §§ 18.2-308.02, and 18.2-308.06 and removes the option of the online training certification and requires that the training certification be in-person. This change takes effect January 1, 2021.I encourage citizens applying for a Concealed Handgun Permit to go to the Virginia State Police Website.

New permit applications must be brought to each Clerk’s Office, but renewal permit applications may be mailed to the Clerk’s Offices, with the appropriate documentation and fee. In addition, each Clerk’s Office may be called for information regarding lost or destroyed permits, or for change of addresses, or to request a replacement permit.

Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk's Staff Celebrates Christmas All Year

During this Christmas Season the Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk’s Staff selected children and seniors to support through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program as part of the staff’s yearlong work to support charities and families in need for 2020.

The Clerk’s Staff purchased gifts for 10 seniors and 3 children from the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program, which benefits members of our local community. Other charities the staff has supported throughout this year include donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Walk, provided meals and support for an Augusta County employee facing health challenges, aided with funeral expenses for a Craigsville family, and provided a Thanksgiving meal for a family in need.

Administering Oath to New Craigsville Town Council Members

I had the honor of administering the oaths to two re-elected and one newly elected Craigsville Town Council Members. Cynthia Doyle and Harvey Sprouse are returning Members, and Brad Ingram is the newest Member.

Augusta County Clerk Receives Restored Records and Applies for Grant

The Clerk's office recently received four important historic records back after extensive conservation work was completed on each record book. The restored records include: Deed Book No. 2 Part 2; Freedman’s Bureau Record of Freedmen 1865-1868, Deed Book 103, and Marriage Register Colored 1863-1887.

“The Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office was very pleased to have been successful in obtaining the 2019 Library of Virginia Circuit Court Records Preservation Program Grant so that these four important records could be preserved for future generations,” Landes said. “I want to thank my predecessors in their diligent efforts to preserve and conserve Augusta County’s historic records, and I am committed to doing the same during my tenure as Clerk.”

The Clerk’s Office has applied for these grants since 1994, and the most recent application was submitted on September 22, 2020, which will cover the 2021 grant cycle. The most recent grant requests funds to restore and conserve Will Book No. 3 (1761-1767); Marriage Register Colored 1888-1910; Deed Book 29 (1796-1798), and Order Book 24 (1796-1799).
