Friends,
I hope this email finds everyone doing well and staying safe. My focus this month is to provide updates from the Clerk's Office including the approval of the Augusta County Court House Highway Marker and recognition for Deputy Clerk Rebecca L. Kimble earning the Virginia Court Clerk’s Association Master Deputy Circuit Court Clerk Certification.

Augusta County Court House Virginia Highway Marker Granted
The Augusta County Court House application for a Virginia Historical Highway Marker was approved on March 18, by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources.
We are very excited to announce that the Augusta County Court House has been recognized by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources as deserving to be granted a Virginia Historical Highway Marker. The current courthouse, built in 1901, is the fifth building to sit on this historic site in downtown Staunton. The county’s first courthouse was a log structure built in 1745.
The Virginia Historical Highway Marker program documents facts, persons, events, and places prominently identified with the history of the nation, state, or region. The Department of Historic Resource’s purpose in erecting markers is to educate the public about Virginia’s history, not to honor, memorialize, or commemorate persons, events, or places. Because highway markers are not honorific in nature, they do not serve the same purpose as monuments, statues, memorial plaques, or war memorials. There are currently more than 2,500 markers located across the Commonwealth of Virginia. The program is among the oldest in the nation and began in 1927.

Concealed Hangun Permit Training Must Be In-Person In 2021
Beginning January 1, 2021, the training requirement to apply for a Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit must be in-person, and will no longer be allowed to be completed online.
The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 264 and Senate Bill 263, which were signed into law by Governor Ralph Northam. The legislation changes Virginia Code §§ 18.2-308.02, and 18.2-308.06 and removes the option of the online training certification and requires that the training certification be in-person. This change takes effect January 1, 2021.I encourage citizens applying for a Concealed Handgun Permit to go to the Virginia State Police Website.
New permit applications must be brought to each Clerk’s Office, but renewal permit applications may be mailed to the Clerk’s Offices, with the appropriate documentation and fee. In addition, each Clerk’s Office may be called for information regarding lost or destroyed permits, or for change of addresses, or to request a replacement permit.
