STAUNTON – Augusta County Clerk of Circuit Court R. Steven Landes announced that the Clerk’s Office is once again seeking high school and college students who wish to serve as interns. The Clerk’s Office will provide internship and mentorship opportunities this Summer to students who are interested in Virginia Government, the Virginia Judicial System, or the law.
“The Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office is pleased to offer this unique educational opportunity for young people in Augusta County for the third time this Summer,” Landes said. “The internships allow young people to see first-hand the work of the Circuit Court and the Clerk’s Office.”
The Clerk’s Office has hosted fifteen students since the internship program was initiated in 2020. Interns will assist the Clerk’s Staff with several assignments and tasks. Interns may be assigned to work with the Clerk’s Staff in the Civil, Criminal, Court, Land Record, Probate, and Accounting Divisions in the office. For those interested in applying to become a Clerk’s Office Intern, they should contact Landes in the Clerk’s Office. Internship candidates will be required to complete an application and submit a cover letter and resume expressing their interest in serving. The Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office is in downtown Staunton at the Augusta County Courthouse. The Clerk serves as the recorder of deeds and probate judge, issues marriage licenses and is the official court administrator for all civil and criminal cases. The Clerk creates and maintains all court files and records, prepares court orders and jury lists, contacts jurors and issues summons and court processes. The Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office provides internship and mentorship opportunities to high school and college students. An internship is provided to those students who are interested in Virginia government, the Virginia Judicial System, or the law.
The Clerk’s Office Intern applicants for both college and high school candidates must submit an application, resume with references, and a cover letter to be considered for either a college or high school internship. Any applicant who does not provide an application, resume with references, and cover letter will not be considered for an internship position.
The skills required for a Clerk’s Office Intern include: excellent customer service; attention to detail; ability to multi-task under pressure; work as a team player; ability to follow directions and willingness to learn; and proficiency in operating a computer, telephone, copier, scanner and fax machine.
The Clerk’s Office Intern will assist the Clerk’s Staff with several assignments and tasks, including answering the telephone, assisting with general office work, assisting the general public, researching answers to questions from the general public and staff, and work on specific projects to be assign by the Clerk of Circuit Court. The Clerk’s Office Intern may be assigned to work with the Clerk’s Staff in the Civil, Criminal, Court, Land Record, Probate, and Accounting Divisions.
The Clerk’s Office Intern will also be asked to provide a set schedule of when he or she is available and will agree to work a certain number of hours per week. In addition to a set schedule the intern and Clerk of Circuit Court will develop a work plan for projects and the day to day assignments to be accomplished. If the intern is obtaining credit for the internship or mentorship, the intern will be required to provide what is expected of the Clerk of Circuit Court and the Clerk’s Office before the internship or mentorship begins.
