Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office And Augusta County Genealogical Society To Host Veterans Event

STAUNTON – Augusta County Clerk of Circuit Court R. Steven Landes and the Augusta County Genealogical Society (ACGS) President Stephen Garber announced that they will be hosting an Augusta County Veterans Day activity at the Augusta County Circuit Courthouse on Thursday, November 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will be for one day only.

In honor of Veterans Day and our Augusta County Veterans, the Augusta County Genealogy Society in conjunction with the Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, will be making available military records, which have been previously housed in the basement of the courthouse in downtown Staunton. This is the first time these records will be available for genealogical research. The records, which include two books on World War I, and 14 books on World War II, will be brought to the Record Room of the Courthouse. Family members may discover exciting information about these respected veterans, and only a few who served in World War II are still with us today.

These fragile books include induction records, muster rolls, service and discharge records of Augusta County citizens who served in World War I and World War II. ACGS volunteers will be on hand to assist with navigating these records and finding information on specific veterans.  ACGS volunteers will be on the first floor in the Records Room of the Augusta County Courthouse. Making copies will not be possible due to the condition of the books, however you will be allowed to take a digital photograph with your phone camera or other compatible devices.

The Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office is in downtown Staunton at the Augusta County Courthouse. The Clerk serves as the recorder of deeds and probate judge, issues marriage licenses and is the official court administrator for all civil and criminal cases. The Clerk creates and maintains all court files and records, prepares court orders and jury lists, contacts jurors and issues summons and court processes.
