The Landes Letter
By Delegate R. Steven Landes
August 2, 2016
Tonight we mark this year's National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. I hope you'll continue reading to learn more about our National Night Out, as well as an upcoming Women's Summit hosted by Congressman Bob Goodlatte. I'd also like to remind you and encourage you to take advantage of this week's Sale's Tax Holiday.
2016 National Night Out
Tonight, communities across the nation will gather with their local law enforcement departments to recognize National Night Out. National Night Out is an annual program that promotes partnerships between police and neighborhoods in order to build relationships that make our communities safer.
Locally, a number of events will be going on in our district. I encourage you to visit the following links to learn more about events in Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Verona. If your schedule permits, I highly encourage you to bring friends and family out to these events to show your support for the invaluable work done by our law enforcement community.
Every day, our men and women in uniform selflessly risk their lives in order to keep us safe. Words cannot express my gratitude for the work they do every day of every year. We can always count on our law enforcement officials to be there for us when we need them most.
Due to their selfless work, the House of Delegates and I continue to make supporting our law enforcement a top priority. In this year’s budget, we increased aid to local police departments, provided additional funding for safety and training, and allocated funds for additional officers. This November, you’ll have an opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment that would allow localities the option of giving property tax relief to the surviving spouse of a law enforcement officer who is killed in the line of duty. I hope you will join me in voting yes on this important constitutional amendment.
2016 Sixth District Women's Conference
Congressman Bob Goodlatte will host the 2016 Sixth District Women's Conference on Saturday, August 13th at 9:00 am at the Kirkley Hotel & Conference Center, located at 2900 Candlers Mountain Road in Lynchburg. The keynote speaker will be Fox News’ Shannon Bream – an alumna of Liberty University. The event will also feature a panel of very talented local women as well as several workshops and a resource fair. This is a free, nonpartisan event that is open to the public and all are welcome.
The goal of this event is to create a positive opportunity for women in the Sixth District to engage with others, access valuable resources, and hear more from speakers about some of the issues facing our nation today. This event will include a resource fair as well as a program of speakers and breakout workshops on starting a small business, financial literacy, and protecting your identity online. To register for the 2016 Women's Conference, please click here, or call Congressman Goodlatte's Lynchburg office at (434) 845-8306.
Sale's Tax Holiday/Tax Free Weekend
This year’s sales tax holiday is August 5th through 7th. Legislation enacted by the 2015 General Assembly combined Virginia’s three sales tax holidays into one three-day holiday beginning the first Friday in August at 12:01 a.m. and ending the following Sunday at 11:59 p.m. During the sales tax holiday period, consumers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products without paying sales tax. This includes qualifying items purchased online, by mail or over the phone. In addition to the specific items exempted, retailers may also choose to offer other items “tax-free” by paying the sales tax themselves during the holiday. To learn more about qualifying items, please visit the Virginia Department of Taxation’s website here.

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, we will be having our annual Valley Business Summit this year on Wednesday, August 17th at the Plecker Center at Blue Ridge Community College.
