WEYERS CAVE, VA ̶ Del. R. Steven Landes, R-Weyers Cave, has announced Governor Terry McAuliffe’s approval of additional legislation he sponsored in the 2017 General Assembly session. House Bills 1396, 1402, 2341, and 2417 will all become law effective July 1, 2017.
“House Bills 1402 and 2341 will help Virginia’s students by requiring Virginia residency for leadership positions at our public institutions of higher education to increase accountability and requiring private sector business and industry representation in the Commonwealth's Board of Education,” said Landes. “House Bill 1396 empowers the Town of Grottoes’ town council to appoint a vice-mayor to serve in the mayor’s absence, and House Bill 2417 will help identify and root out healthcare fraud. My legislative focus has been on economic development, providing high-quality education and improving healthcare, and these bills, along with previous legislation signed by the Governor will lead to advances in all three areas.”
Governor McAuliffe has signed 768 bills into law and vetoed 40 bills in the 2017 General Assembly session. He has signed eight bills passed by the House and Senate sponsored by Delegate Landes and has proposed amendments to Landes’ House Bill 2053, which allows for the establishment of direct primary care agreements between doctors and their patients. The Governor vetoed Landes’ House Bills 2191 and 2342, regarding sexually explicit materials and the establishment of regional charter schools respectively. McAuliffe has vetoed a record number of bills during his Administration.
